If you’re tired of giving a vague nod of the head every time wine stewards ask you if the wines they’ve decanted for your meals are to your liking, or if even you have finally had it up to here with your same-old same-old chardonnay or your go-to prosecco, it’s time to make haste over to the nearest wine tasting classes and learn some things! NYC is filled with wine tasting classes for wannabe or established oenophiles, so there’s bound to be one that suits your fancy, skill level and bank account. Looking through the following list is a great way to start off on your hunt for red.

Corkbuzz Wine Studio

Whether your wine lexicon is limited to “red” and “white”, or you know enough to break out into a running man dance if someone uncorks a bottle of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru in front of you and pours you a glass, there’s more for you to learn at master sommelier Laura Maniec’s Corkbuzz Wine Studio. Named one of the best wine bars in the entire city, people come to Corkbuzz for two reasons: to drink fabulous wine and eat fabulous food or to learn about and drink fabulous wine. If you don’t know your pinot noir from your malbec, the Wine 101 class ($75) is perfect for getting your palate wet. If you’re studying for sommelier certification, a class like Blind Tasting 201-Reds ($200) will teach you how to dissect the subtle nuances of different varieties.

NYC Wine Class

When you register for wine tasting classes at the NYC Wine Class, you’re not just learning about different types of wines. You’re going to learn why you picked that pinot and what made you choose that chard. Founded and run by Andrew Harwood, the esteemed wine specialist whose experience is so extensive he may as well have bordeaux running through his veins, this school teaches students to understand why they’re swishing that glass before they sip and how to utter the words “leathery tannin” without feeling foolish. If you take advantage of the school’s “Any Class, Any Time – $90” promotion, you can take part in any classes offered by the school at any time.
