Casa Mezcal on the Lower East Side

It isn’t a secret that I love tacos and now, because of my Derby article, the world knows it. And I’m proud. I really love any food that you get to eat with your hands. Getting to dive in and just go for the goods is what I’m all about. I’ve been known to still eat my steak like a 5 year old.  I will cut it all up first so I have no delays in the eating process. Tacos avoid all of the fuss as they are so easy and so ready to be gobbled up! So when taco night with my friends was rescheduled for this past Saturday, I rejoiced.

Our Taco Night trip to Casa Mezcal

The downstairs area was loud and crowded but the waitress guided us upstairs to a quieter smaller dining room. The upstairs still had music playing, but not blasting, and for a group of 7 it was much easier to carry on conversation. Of course I had done a full menu scan before arrival so I knew my order before we sat down. Chips with salsas, guacamole and pico de gallo kept us snacking while the group pondered drink and dinner orders. The tomatillo salsa was a favorite of the group. For the table we got a pitcher of their classic margarita as well as their spicy margarita which were both served on the rocks. The waitress served half of the group glasses with spicy seasoned salt on the rim and the other half had a hibiscus salt rim, which I did not particularly care for. Apart from the hibiscus salt both margaritas were tasty and the spicy option had the perfect amount of heat.

The food took almost an hour to arrive but with our lively group and plenty of chips and drinks it didn’t seem too long at all. I ordered the Camaron tacos which consisted of shrimp, avocado and chipotle sauce. They rocked! Tacos also came on 2 tortillas, which I highly appreciated because of their messy nature. Other orders included chicken tacos and chicken quesadillas. All signs pointed towards delicious.

Overall, I think this is a great place to go with a group but probably not for a date night. The location is great and right near plenty of other great bars to head to after dinner. The food was good, the atmosphere was fun, but I do hope to see a shiny ‘A’ in the window the next time we go to Casa Mezcal.   They also do live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, which sounds like a good time.  I think it’s worth a try and certainly passed my Taco Test.
